About Me
Mecandes [meh-CAN-dees] isn’t my real name; it popped into my head when I was trying to come up with a name for my gypsy-like bard character in Ultima Online.
I’ve been somewhat enamoured of bards ever since I played The Bard’s Tale as a pre-teen; I picture bards as dashing, cunning, and musically talented — in other words: completely unlike myself.
My name is Rob, and I’m your run-of-the-mill computer geek from the 80s.
It all started with my Commodore 64 — I got into the local BBS scene and eventually became a SysOp myself (I loved the ANSI art and the FidoNet Star Wars Echo). I graduated to the Amiga, and in the early days of the Internet, I messed around on MUDs and set up web sites about my interests (such as The Bard’s Tale Compendium and an Ultima Online guild that was featured in Origin’s Official Guide to Ultima Online). It encouraged me to study graphic design at college, and now I do web and graphic design for a living… but let’s not talk about work here!
I met my wife on-line, and I’ve become a geek dad. I enjoy playing around with my daughter and son on Xbox and other platforms. I also like to follow science and tech news, and you can learn about my interests in gaming, books, music and board games via my online profiles, see what articles I’ve been interested in, or take a peek at my lifestream.
