The Children of Húrin

Book Review, April 2007

The Children of Húrin (book review) / 41fTkBuj0OL. SL160 It’s great to have this tale from Middle-earth’s history brought together from Tolkien’s notes in a meaningful way. It is a dark and tragic tale, very different than Tolkien’s other work, and I really appreciated that aspect… but unfortunately, it’s not written in the same kind of prose as The Lord of the Rings, nor with the same kind of character development, thus only the more hard-core Tolkien fans are likely to get through it and enjoy it. It’s a great idea for a story at its heart, and it would be great to see someone take it and distill it down into film form.

Your Comment:

Obi-Wan and Anakin pitting their wits against Thrawn? It seemed like a fantastic premise for a prequel novel by Timothy Zahn, and I was greatly anticipating it — but I was mildly disappointed with the result, and it seems like a missed opportunity.

Beatiful and captivating film. Nice to see this style of martial arts brought into the mainstream — actually, this is what I had always imagined Force-weilding Jedi would fight like… too bad George Lucas didn’t hire this choreographer…
