After Rocky Balboa, I was expecting to see Stallone return to the tones of the original First Blood film here — but alas, no. Nothing but an intensely gory waste of time.

The self-congratulatory American-as-apple-pie feel of this film felt irritatingly disingenuous. Hanks and Roberts play caricatures, while Hoffman seems to burst on stage into a completely different film; I’m not sure if that is a strike for or against him… but I think I might have rather seen the film Hoffman thought [...]
This was great, but I’m still waiting for someone to make it set in the same time period as the original book. If you’re going to modernize the story, do it on the cheap with camcorders like The Blair Witch Project.
